2006 年10月下旬，暴風雪襲擊科羅拉多州。在暴風雪抵達之前36小時，氣象預報員就開始預測它的來臨，並發出多次的警報。許多人湧入雜貨店添購生活備用品，輪胎車廠也超時加班，以幫助人們面對即將來臨的寒冬需求。人人都在談論這場即將來到的暴風雪。在風雪來臨前，各學校及公司也宣布將於當天關門。因此，當暴風雪來臨時，大部分的人都能安全地留在家裏，沒有人去上班或上課。
當我們相信警告時，行動就會不一樣，我們的生活和對信仰的態度，也是如此。保羅寫信給帖撒羅尼迦教會的基督徒，提醒他們，主的日子來到，如同夜間的賊一樣，絲毫沒有預警（帖撒羅尼迦前書5章2節）。保羅籲請他們做好準備，以免在靈性上失去警覺，並提醒他們要警醒自制（6節）。
保羅提出的要求與耶穌自己的話遙相呼應，耶穌也要求信徒要警醒預備，「所以，你們也要預備，因為你們想不到的時候，人子就來了。」（馬太福音24章44節）
