10:35-36 馬可記載是約翰和雅各向耶穌提出請求，馬太則記載是他們的母親來提出請求。這兩段記述並沒有衝突，母親與兒子一致要求基督，在祂的國裡給他們尊貴的位分。
要先求祂的國和祂的義，有時候我也不太明白……
10:37 門徒跟當日許多猶太人一樣，對舊約先知所預言的彌賽亞國度抱有錯誤的觀念。他們以為耶穌會在地上建立一個王國，把以色列從羅馬的壓迫中解放出來。雅各和約翰想在其中得到尊貴的位置。不過，耶穌的國度並不屬於這個世界，祂國度的中心也不在皇宮和寶座，而在信徒的心裡和生命中。門徒直等到耶穌復活了才明白這一點。
為主受苦，易講不易做，我真的甘願受苦嗎？
10:38-39 雅各和約翰表示願意為耶穌面對任何磨難，他們的確為主受了苦：在十二使徒中雅各最先為主殉道（參徒12:2），約翰被放逐（參啟1:9）。我們很輕易就說要為基督忍受任何苦楚，但往往因為極微小的困難而埋怨。我們若願意為基督的緣故赴湯蹈火，也必須願意為服事別人而受苦。
常常我都是很用心禱告，為何祂卻沒有答應……
10:38-40 耶穌沒有嘲笑雅各和約翰，卻拒絕他們的要求。我們可向神求任何東西，不過神要給我們最好的，而不單是我們想要的東西。所以為我們著想，祂會拒絕我們某些請求。
