14:27-31 這是耶穌在同一晚第二次預言門徒會不認祂和背棄祂（參路22:31-34；約13:36-38），這可能是門徒強烈反應的原因（14:31）。
耶穌為甚麼這樣禱告呢？難道祂想逃避？
14:35-36 耶穌是不是想逃避自己的使命呢？耶穌說出內心的感受，卻沒有抗拒神的旨意，祂重申要遵行神的旨意。祂的禱告突出祂將要忍受的是比死亡更加可怕的痛苦，因為祂要承擔全人類的罪惡。這“杯”指在十字架上與父神分開的悲痛（參來5:7-9）。無罪的神子承擔了我們的罪孽，與神隔絕片刻，使我們得救！
不從自己的意思，難；只從神的意思，更難？
14:36 耶穌禱告時，知道遵行父神旨意要付出代價，也明白將要受甚麼苦。祂不想忍受這種可怕的經歷，然而，祂禱告說：“不要從我的意思，只要從你的意思。”要得到任何有價值的東西也要付出代價。你獻身與神付出了甚麼代價呢？甘心付出這代價，到最後就能得到有永恆價值的東西。
