16:1 法利賽人和撒都該人是猶太領袖中兩大派別（參3章；可2章附表），在很多事情上，他們的見解都截然相反。法利賽人小心地遵守著他們的宗教規條和傳統，相信這就是通往神的道路，也相信所有經卷的權威和死人復活的事。撒都該人只承認摩西五經的權威，不信死人復活的事。然而，他們卻有共同的敵人——耶穌，並要聯手殺死祂。
真心追求，沒有神蹟又如何；那些法利賽人有何居心？
16:1 法利賽人和撒都該人要求一個從天上而來的神蹟，企圖解釋耶穌的神蹟只是一種戲法、巧合或運用邪惡能力的結果。他們相信只有神才可以從天上顯神蹟，故肯定超越耶穌的能力範圍。雖然顯神蹟對耶穌來說是輕而易舉的事，祂卻沒有這樣做來使他們留下深刻印象，祂知道即使從天上顯神蹟也不能使他們信服祂就是彌賽亞，因為他們早已決定不信祂。
約拿在魚腹中三日三夜，可算不得了啦，耶穌的事可更叫人嘩然……
16:4 藉著約拿在大魚腹中三日的神蹟，耶穌預言自己的死和復活（參12:38-42）。
讓我看一次神蹟，只一次，我的信心就會更堅定——這樣的話，曾否在你心響起過？
