38:15-24 猶大為甚麼對自己去嫖妓直認不諱，卻要把作妓女的兒婦處死呢？要明白這種矛盾，我們就要知道當時迦南婦女在社會上的地位。婦女最重要的功能是生兒育女，為家族傳宗接代。為了確保兒女是丈夫所生的，人們都期望新婦是處女，作妻子的亦不可紅杏出牆、不守婦道。如果妻子犯了淫亂之罪，就要被處死。不過，有些婦女沒有家庭，她們可能作廟妓，靠拜偶像之人的奉獻來維持生活；或者作一般的妓女，受尋芳客的供給。她們所生的兒女不列在任何人的家譜中，因此和她們發生關係的人，也就沒有跟任何家族人的親屬犯姦淫。
猶大覺得招妓度宿是無傷大雅之事，更何況他樂意付費。可是，他卻要處死她瑪，因為如果她是作妓女而懷孕，所生的孫兒就不屬於他的血統。猶大顯然從來沒有想到道德的問題，他所關心的只是保存家族的血脈。但是她瑪而不是猶大，主動地使這個家族有合法的後嗣，這真是一種極大的諷剌。她引誘猶大的行為卻比猶大所做的更合乎律法的精神，因為他沒有叫他的小兒子示拉娶她為妻。
這件事絕不是說神不計較人作妓女。其實，在整部聖經中，行淫都是嚴重的罪行。論到此事中的德行，可取之處只是盡上對家族本分的忠心，這也是重要的。其次，猶大與她瑪是耶穌基督在肉身上的直系祖先（參太1:1-6）。
